Energy Company Building Ethanol Plant in Nevada

07/18/2008
Fulcrum BioEnergy, Inc., a California-based developer of alternative energy products, will construct a commercial-scale production facility in Storey County, Nevada - 10 miles east of Reno - to convert municipal solid waste into ethanol. The $120 million project is set to begin construction by the end of this year and begin operations in early 2010. "Unlike conventional ethanol technology, which uses corn and other agricultural feedstock, our plant will utilized processed municipal solid waste, which will not affect the cost or availability of our nation's food supply," says E. James Macias, Fulcrum's president and CEO. The plant will produce approximately 10.5 million gallons of ethanol processed from nearly 90,000 tons of municipal sold waste, mostly household garbage. Company officials say the plant will utilize gasification technology from Integrated Environmental Technologies that does not create significant levels of environmental emissions.
