Laboratory Project to Create 1,000 Jobs in Long Island, New York
Area Development Online News Desk (02/12/2009)
A major project at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, will create up to 1,000 jobs with the awarding of a government construction contract. According to Long Island’s Newsday, Torcon, Inc., a New Jersey-based construction company, will construct the $912 million research installation at Brookhaven for a high-intensity light beam project that will allow an unprecedented level of precision for ultramicroscopic medical, energy, and materials research. The project, approved by the U.S. Department of Energy in last month, will upgrade the lab’s 26-year-old light source. Officials at the laboratory estimate that $63 million in labor will be necessary for the construction of the facility, and that most of it will be supplied by Long Island labor unions.
