Energy from the Earth on Long Island

Dec/Jan 09
Just because hotel guests demand luxury doesn't mean there's no budget to mind. Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) lent a hand when the posh Inn at Foxhollow in Woodbury, New York, was designing its heating and cooling system. At no charge, a consultant reviewed plans to determine the most energy-efficient way to go, and recommended a geothermal system.

Going geothermal, which extracts heat from the ground in the winter and returns it in the summer, offered a number of key advantages. It opened the door to some $180,000 in rebates, and allows significant energy savings - tens of thousands of dollars a year, in this case. And it does so without sacrificing comfort, a must in the hotel business.

LIPA provides similar consulting services to businesses of all kinds. For example, the shark tank exhibit at Atlantis Marine World makes use of a geothermal system that LIPA helped design. Meanwhile, for residential customers, the utility is helping make solar energy affordable, with a variety of incentives that shave the cost of installation.
