11/24/2021
According to state officials, the distribution center will bring substantial job creation to Western Maryland over the next few years, tripling the company’s workforce in the county. Construction on the 40-acre site is expected to begin within the next couple months , with completion expected next year.
“FedEx locating its new distribution center near Cumberland is an amazing investment for not only the city, but the entire surrounding region in Allegany County,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly M. Schulz. “Our distribution and logistics sector has experienced several growth periods this year, and FedEx’s commitment to Maryland shows that this industry will continue growing in our state for years to come.”
With more than 180,000 employees, FedEx Ground services more than 640 distribution and pickup-and-delivery hubs. According to the company's latest fiscal quarter results, FedEx Ground moved more than 12 million packages per day, and brought in $30 billion during fiscal year 2021.
"We are excited about this new project in Allegany County. It will be a significant addition to the local economy,” said Jeff Barclay, director of Allegany County’s Department of Economic & Community Development. “There certainly will be a large number of construction jobs needed. But most importantly, the company's operations are expected to employ a mix of full and part-time team members at the facility."
FedEx Corp. recently announced that it has experienced tremendous job growth during the pandemic, increasing employment by more than nine percent, while e-commerce sales skyrocketed nearly 40 percent between 2020 - 2021.
