Fiat Chrysler Canada Plans $1.5 Billion Investment in Windsor, Ontario
10/23/2020
“This is a homerun for the community of Windsor," autoworker’s union Unifor National President Jerry Dias told the CBC.
In commenting about the automaker reaching a tentative deal with Canadian autoworkers, Dias explained FCA would invest in a state-of-the-art vehicle platform to assemble plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles, with at least one new model rolling off the line in 2025. "The work in Windsor will start in 2023," said Dias. "We'll start mass manufacturing in 2024."
The union estimated many as 2,000 associates would be added at the Windsor plant in 2024.
In addition, FCA’s Brampton assembly plant would also see a $50 million investment, which would allow additional models to be produced at that factory.
Dias told the network “FCA has committed to adding three product derivatives to its plants. Those products will lead to the recall of over 100 members at the Etobicoke casting plant."
According to CBC News, “earlier this year, the Windsor plant lost its third shift causing 1,500 workers to be laid off. Dias said the new jobs added will include calling back 425 workers and adding more than 1,500 new jobs to the Windsor region."
"With this investment and as vehicles start to roll off the assembly line in 2024, our third shift will be back and we expect that the total jobs will rise to over 2,000 more in the community in Windsor," said Dias.
FCA confirmed a tentative agreement was reached with Unifor on a new contract, but wouldn't divulge any details at this point. This tentative deal is based on the one struck with Ford workers in Canada and includes a five percent pay raise.
