Giant Wind Farm to Be Built in United Kingdom

12/03/2008
One of the largest wind farms in the world will be constructed off the coast of Wales, with the capability of powering more than 500,000 homes at full operation and when combined with production from two nearby farms. The United Kingdom's Press Association reports that the Gwynt y Mor wind farm, which will be run by British utility npower, will consist of 150 to 250 turbines positioned approximately eight miles off the coast near the town of Llandudno and should begin producing power in 2012. The British government has approved the project. "The decision underlines the government's commitment to massively expanding renewable energy generation in the U.K. to help tackle climate change and improve security of energy supply," says Paul Cowling, managing director of npower renewables.
