Survey: IT Hiring to Remain Healthy for Remainder of 2008

Thirty-five percent of information technology (IT) employers are planning to increase the number of full-time, permanent employees they hire between now and the end of 2008, according to a survey conducted by CareerBuilder.com. The company's Midyear Employment Forecast also reveals that 45 percent of IT employers have open positions for which they cannot find qualified candidates, and 31 percent are keeping employees who may not be performing at optimal levels in order to keep work flowing. "The pervasiveness of and reliance upon technology continues to escalate and the amount of graduates in IT is trailing behind their knowledge and expertise," says Eric Presley, chief technology officer for CareerBuilder.com. "Employers are becoming more competitive in their recruitment and retention efforts to secure top talent." Nearly 25 percent of IT hiring managers say they will raise salaries by 5 percent or more in the second half of 2008 compared with the first half. In the meantime, 53 percent of IT workers say they are satisfied or very satisfied with their pay, 38 percent describe their workloads as heavy or too heavy, and 20 percent say they are actively seeking new positions. The survey was conducted online by Harris Interactive among 216 IT hiring managers and human resource professionals, and 506 full-time IT employees over the age of 18.
