G-8 Leaders Agree to Pollution Cuts by 2050

07/08/2008
At their summit in Japan, leaders of the "Group of Eight" (G-8) - the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Russia - pledged that their countries would cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050. They did not set a shorter-term target for reducing carbon-based pollution, nor did they agree on a starting point from which to make the reductions. The non-binding agreement also recommends that developing nations, including China and India, be included in any climate change accords. In a joint statement, the leaders emphasize that a "successful global response to climate change requires a partnership between developing and developed countries. Developing countries' efforts to put in place appropriate national mitigation and adaptation plans to build low carbon, climate resilient economies, should be supported by scaled up assistance from developed countries."
