Environment One Corporation Plans Battery Manufacturing Facility In Niskayuna, New York
02/02/2017
E/One has established a partnership with Eos Energy Storage, which is dedicated to delivering battery storage solutions that enable safe, reliable, and cost-leading electricity for utilities and their customers. The company will manufacture the Eos Aurora system, powered by Eos’ proprietary Znyth (zinc hybrid cathode) battery technology which is the first inherently safe, low-cost, long-lasting aqueous battery.
Development of the Eos product was supported by the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority, through collaborative testing with Con Edison of New York, DNV GL, and the New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology consortium at the BEST Test & Commercialization Center in Rochester, as well as an overseas demonstration project with global power producer ENGIE.
Empire State Development, New York’s chief economic development agency, has offered E/One up to $1.25 million in performance-based Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits, which are tied directly to the creation of more than 80 new jobs over the next five years and the retention of more than 130 existing jobs. The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority also will provide a PILOT agreement for the new building. In addition to E/One’s $10 million investment in the new facility, Eos plans to invest $10 million over five years for dedicated equipment to support high-volume battery production.
“The Eos megawatt energy storage product may actually define the electric utility industry’s investment cycle over the next 20 years and E/One, as a fabricator with a tremendous track record in lean manufacturing, further enables Eos to compete in this dynamic global space,” said Eric LaCoppola, President, Environment One Corporation. “We appreciate the support from Governor Cuomo and New York State, and look forward to continued growth in Upstate New York.”
“We are gratified to partner with E/One and the Governor’s Office to build manufacturing capability in the Capital Region,” said Eos CEO Michael Oster. “The Eos Aurora and Znyth technology were developed in New York with the support of NYSERDA and will help to strengthen the state’s energy infrastructure while supporting creation of high-technology jobs. By working together, we will help local industry realize its full potential and will make New York State a global player and leading manufacturer of utility-scale energy storage.”
“New York is on the fast track to becoming one of the nation’s key hubs for high-tech innovation and E/One’s exciting plans to expand in the Capital Region continues this momentum,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo. “This smart investment will help create jobs and foster innovation in this vital manufacturing sector and continue to grow this region’s economy.”
Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Howard Zemsky said, “Governor Cuomo’s leadership and support for new technology continues to solidify New York’s status as a national leader in advanced manufacturing, leading to new, well-paying jobs in Upstate New York. With a highly-skilled workforce and the lowest tax rates for manufacturers in decades, New York State is a perfect fit for E/One and Eos, and we’re proud to partner with them on this expansion.”
