Survey: Bored Workers More Disgruntled Than Overworked Ones

02/07/2008
While more employees report feeling overworked than bored, those who feel they have too little to do are often more disgruntled and could have more detrimental effects on the workplace. According to research from Sirota Survey Intelligence, employees who report "too little work" are often doing jobs for which they are ill-suited or unqualified, or have jobs that are poorly designed. As a result, they have far lower job satisfaction and sense of accomplishment. "Bored employees are also less proud of their employers, less innovative, and feel less valued compared to all other workers," says Douglas Klein, president of Sirota Survey Intelligence. More than 1 million employees were surveyed for the research. "The complaints of both overworked and bored employees should be taken seriously," says Klein. "But bored employees have an even greater negative impact on an organization, lowering morale and productivity, and draining resources."
