Brazilian Textile Manufacturer Investing $170M in Texas

Santana Textiles, a fabric manufacturer based in Brazil, will invest at least $170 million to build a denim factory in Edinburg, Texas. The project should create approximately 800 new jobs that, according to state officials, will offer average salaries between $26,000 and $30,000 per year. The facility, which will be built on industrial land donated by a local economic development group, is planned for opening in January 2010. According to KVEO-TV, the company's president, Raimundo Delfino, chose the site because of the area's abundance of cotton: "If you look at the business, you must first guarantee you have your supply. It's guaranteed; I cannot run out of supply." The report also says the company looked at locations in Mexico and South America, but found the United States a more practical choice for its treaties and business agreements with other countries. The state has offered the company financial incentives that total at least $1.6 million, and the city of Edinburg will make utility improvements at the site.
