U.S. Loses 62,000 Jobs in June; Manufacturing, Services Hit Hard

Non-farm employment in the United States continued a downward trend in June, with approximately 62,000 jobs lost, according to statistics released today by the U.S. Department of Labor. Within sectors, construction jobs fell by 43,000, manufacturing by 33,000, business and professional services by 30,000, fabricated metal products by 9,000, printing and related services by 6,000, and wood products by 6,000. Employment in automotive and related parts added 6,000 jobs over the previous month, largely a reflection of striking workers returning to work. On the positive side, the food services sector rose by 16,000 jobs, healthcare up by 15,000, and mining up by 8,000.
