China to Contribute US$1.4B to Experimental Nuclear Project

The Chinese government has announced that it will contribute 10 billion yuan (approximately US$1.4 billion) toward the cost of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), a joint multinational project that aims to research nuclear fusion as a source of clean and limitless energy. Agence France-Presse reports that China's contribution represents approximately 10 percent of the cost of the reactor, which will be located in France and is expected to go online by 2016. Also participating in the project, which is currently in its initial stages, are the United States, the European Union, Japan, Russia, and India. If the experimental fusion project proves successful, a prototype commercial reactor will be built.
