Residential Construction Improves in Birmingham, Ala., but Commercial Sinks

McGraw-Hill Construction has reported that the building and construction climate is improving in Birmingham, Alabama. Future commercial construction reported contracts were up 13 percent last month to $42.9 million, an increase from $37.9 million in March 2009.

Contracts for future residential construction rose to $47.6 million, an increase of 6 percent from $44.9 million last year. Residential contracts were also up 63 percent across the state of Alabama to $312.5 million for the month.

Some construction levels dropped, however. Commercial residential contracts dropped 47 percent and non-building, which includes infrastructure, utilities, and airports, fell 26 percent. For the year to date, Birmingham's commercial contracts fell 67 percent, but residential rates rose 14 percent.
