Sematech Moves Two Chip Programs to Albany, New York

Sematech, a chip research consortium, will move a second research program from Austin, Texas to Albany, New York, according to the American-Statesman. The program, called Front End Processes, will move by next year. The company will also relocate its largest research program, the International Sematech Manufacturing Initiative (ISMI) to Albany.

"Sematech is continuing to conduct programs and operations in Austin, as well as program partnerships worldwide, and we're continuing to meet our obligations t our stakeholders and partners, including the state of Texas," Sematech spokesperson Anne Englander told the Statesman. "At this point, our plans are to have programs and staff in Austin, Albany, and other locations in 2011 and beyond, depending on the requirements and funding of our semiconductor and emerging technology programs."

New York State is offering Sematech at least $20 million to move. In 2003 and 2008, New York extended a total of $460 million in incentives to Sematech. Texas has also worked to keep Sematech in the state. In 2004 it gave the company $80 million in grants and loans from the Texas Enterprise Fund.

The two programs will likely move to the Albany NanoTech research complex at the University of Albany.
