U.S. EDA Announces 2010 Innovation in Economic Development Awards

"The 2010 Innovation Award winners showcase some of the nation's best practices for promoting economic development through collaborative initiatives and highlight outstanding examples of regional success in the global marketplace," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development John Fernandez. "I congratulate all the winners for their tremendous contributions to strengthen our nation's economy."
This year's winners are:
• CONNECT of La Jolla, California - CONNECT wins for Innovation in Regional Innovation Clusters (RICs). The non-profit organization aims to commercialize technology emerging from the San Diego area's federally-funded research institutions. It also offers continuing education, networking, and recognition for startups.
• Bluegrass Business Development Partnership (BBDP) of Lexington, Kentucky - BBDP wins for Innovation in Commercialization. This collaboration unites the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, Commerce Lexington's economic development divisions, and the University of Kentucky's Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship, Lexington's statewide Innovation & Commercialization Center, and Lexington's Small Business Development Center. The organization connects small businesses and entrepreneurships with resources for success.
• Pennsylvania Center for Trade Development "Envoy Program" of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania - This program wins for Innovation in Global Export Promotion. The program increases global competitiveness of Keystone State businesses by building bilingual sales and marketing presences in international markets. The state's Department of Community and Economic Development supports the program.
• University of Arizona Tech Park's "Solar Zone" of Tucson, Arizona - The Solar Zone wins for Innovation in Green Technology. It represents a partnership between the University of Arizona and Tucson Electric Power to create an environment where companies can test and develop nest-generation renewable energy products and technologies.
