Mediterranean Shipping Company Expands Mount Pleasant, South Carolina Facility

Mediterranean Shipping Company, a container shipping company, will invest more than $1.7 million to expand operations at its Charleston County, South Carolina facility, with plans to create 30 additional jobs.

The firm will be adding equipment to its existing Charleston facility, located at 700 Watermark Boulevard in Mt. Pleasant, in order to create a new data recovery center for the company. Additionally, the company has purchased an adjacent property and will use that space for “MSC University,” a training center for the company’s employees and managers.

“We look forward to expanding our footprint in the Charleston area and building on our previous success. We appreciate the support we’ve received from state and local officials as we’ve grown throughout the years in the Lowcountry,” said Sergio Fedelini, vice president of Mediterranean Shipping Company.

“It’s exciting to see a world-class company like Mediterranean Shipping Company choose to grow here in South Carolina. This announcement not only reflects well on our business-friendly climate, but also on the Port of Charleston – a key selling point for many companies locating here,” said Gov. Nikki Haley.

“Mediterranean Shipping Company has been operating in Charleston for more than 20 years, and today’s announcement shows the company’s continued commitment to the Palmetto State. Our distribution and logistics sector continues to create good jobs, and each of these jobs will have an impact in Charleston,” said Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt. As an incentive, the Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved a Governor’s Closing Fund grant of $100,000.

“Mediterranean Shipping Company's commitment to doing business in the Town of Mount Pleasant is clearly evidenced by its decision to expand its South Atlantic headquarters,” said Mayor Billy Swails. “We see MSC as a partner in our mission to foster economic growth and we look forward to continuing our excellent relationship with the company.”

“Just as MSC has brought bigger ships to Charleston Harbor carrying more cargo and economic benefit, so has the company expanded the number of local jobs and positive impact to the Lowcountry,” said Jim Newsome, president and CEO of the South Carolina Ports Authority. “Thank you MSC for your commitment to our port and our state. Let’s continue to grow together.”
