Orbis is a global asset management group, with over US$16 billion in equity and absolute return funds. The funds operations division in Vancouver will likely grow to 50 people in functions that include fund accounting, investor services, securing settlements, and client reporting. Vancouver also houses a major development center for IT systems.
According to Garth Rempel, director of Orbis Client Services (Canada) Ltd., "Reliability and scalability of international data communications networks are key to our business. Vancouver competes favorably on the world stage in these areas. Relative to other jurisdictions and cities we researched, the talent pool in Vancouver proved very appealing. The work force is well educated and highly skilled." Rempel added, "Local legal and accounting firms went out of their way to make us feel welcome and assist us in the initial set up phase."
