The investment will include a new AI manufacturing technologies R&D center for battery production located at the company’s headquarters.
"The decision to choose Canada as home for our Global AI Manufacturing Technologies R&D Center was driven by Canada's highly qualified talent and strong collaborations with world-leading universities,” said Rainer Brehm, CEO, Factory Automation, Siemens Digital Industries. “The new R&D Center for Battery Production will position Siemens as a key player in the global battery sector, developing the critical technology advancements for the industry to meet the increasing demand for these products."
The project will be supported by a $7.2 million forgivable loan through the Invest Ontario Fund, subject to reaching a definitive agreement.
“Ontario’s end-to-end EV supply chain, expertise in advanced manufacturing, and dynamic technology ecosystem make it an ideal location to develop next-generation solutions for the battery manufacturing sector. By establishing its global R&D centre in Ontario, Siemens Canada is tapping into a diverse pool of top-tier scientific and engineering talent. The company will also partner with local battery manufacturers and world-class universities to pilot research outcomes. Thanks to our world-class workforce and competitive business environment, Ontario continues to be a global destination for investment and job creation, particularly in our EV and EV battery sector. We’re thrilled to welcome this latest investment by Siemens, along with the up to 90 good-paying jobs it will create in Ontario,” noted Hon. Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade.
Siemens AG is a German multinational technology conglomerate focused on industrial automation, distributed energy resources, rail transport and health technology. The company currently operates 37 office and production facilities across Canada.
“Siemens Canada’s global R&D centre will equip Ontario battery manufacturers with the technology needed to stay ahead in a fast-evolving industry. This investment marks an important milestone for Ontario’s growing leadership in battery manufacturing, and it is a testament to the province’s leadership in the automotive sector,” added Khawar Nasim, Invest Ontario’s incoming CEO.”
