Germany-Based Evonik Plans Vancouver, British Columbia, Manufacturing Operations

Germany-based specialty chemicals company Evonik plans to establish operations in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The more than $108.3 million project will include the construction of a new GMP drug product manufacturing facility that will support vaccines, therapeutics and other advanced medicines. Production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2029.

“The Vancouver region is a vibrant hub for life sciences innovation, and Evonik's Health Care business is proud to be growing within and with this ecosystem,” said Evonik Health Care Business Line Head Guido Skudlarek. “This investment strengthens both our regional presence and our global network for lipid-based drug delivery.”

To support the project, the Canadian federal government’s Strategic Response Fund will provide up to $49.1 million.

“Evonik's expansion in Vancouver underscores Canada's leadership in life sciences and innovation,” noted Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions Mélanie Joly. “This investment will drive advances in lipid-based drug delivery, create highly skilled jobs, and bolster British Columbia's growing biotech ecosystem. The Government of Canada is proud to support Evonik's goals, which will help position Canada at the forefront of next-generation vaccines and medicines.”

Evonik is a specialty chemicals company that develops and manufactures materials and chemical products for markets including automotive, construction, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, consumer goods, and industrial manufacturing.

“With unprecedented attacks on our sovereignty, it’s never been more important to support the Canadian companies and researchers that are solving real world health challenges, creating jobs, and making life better for people here at home,” added British Columbia Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth Adrian Dix. “Through British Columbia's Look West strategy, we have a 10-year goal to double the number of jobs in B.C.’s life sciences sector to 40,000, and to boost its economic impact by 75%, and this is another positive step forward in that goal.”
