Carver Maritime Expands Processing & Distribution Complex in North Charleston, South Carolina

Carver Maritime, an industrial port known for its shipping and warehousing storage operations, plans a more than $14 million expansion at its existing facility in North Charleston, South Carolina.

With a deep-water pier for loading and offloading ships and barges, along with more than half-a-million square feet of warehousing space, Carver Maritime accommodates ships carrying cargo such as salt, break bulk, gypsum and stone aggregates.

The company’s 400-acre marine terminal offers dock capability for ships up to 750 feet with a draft of 36 feet. Located at 1400 Pierside Street, Building 190, Suite D in North Charleston, South Carolina, the company is constructing a modern processing and distribution center that will export through the Hugh K. Leatherman, Sr. Terminal at the Port of Charleston and Palmetto Railways’ planned Navy Base Intermodal Facility. The new facility is expected to be online by the summer of 2020.

As an incentive, the Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved a $100,000 Set-Aside grant to Charleston County to assist with costs of building improvements.

“First, we would like to give credit to Charleston County Economic Development, the city of North Charleston and the State of South Carolina for their competitive spirit of attracting new and growing existing businesses within Charleston. Like many companies, we could have expanded our business by the lure of incentives from other states, but the fact Charleston County really wanted our business to grow here was the primary reason we made this capital investment,” said President & CEO of Carver Companies Carver Laraway.

“Our intermodal network continues to stimulate economic development in our region, and we credit South Carolina Ports Authority and Palmetto Railways for their investments in creating a friendly business environment, so companies like Carver Maritime can be successful. We look forward to supporting Carver Maritime as they continue to grow in our community,” explained Charleston County Economic Development Executive Director Steve Dykes.
