Railroad Freight Traffic Increases From 2009 Levels

The Association of American Railroads reports that freight traffic on U. S. railroads increased from last year's levels during the week ending March 13. The total volume for the week was approximately 31.3 billion ton-miles, up 4.3 percent from last year, but down 9 percent from 2008.

U. S. railroads originated nearly 290,000 carloads over the week, an increase of more than 3 percent from the same week in 2009, but a decrease of 12 percent from 2008.

Of the 19 carload commodity groups, 13 made gains from last year. Metal transport increased more than 54 percent, waste and scrap nearly 32 percent, grains nearly 22 percent, and lumber and wood nearly 20 percent. Coal transports decreased more than 5 percent, and pulp and paper products declined more than 9 percent.
