Biotech Company Building $80 Million Manufacturing Plant in Pennsylvania

09/21/2009
Biotechnology company Morphotek Inc. will construct a new manufacturing facility in Exton, Pennsylvania, according to the Norristown Times Herald. The company has purchased three buildings next to its headquarters and plans to demolish them to build the new plant; while the company says it does not disclose financial information, the Philadelphia Business Journal reports that the new facility will cost $80 million. The Times Herald says the 60,000-square-foot facility will manufacture drugs for clinical trials; Morphotek specializes in the development of monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of cancer and currently outsources its manufacturing to third-party companies in the United States and overseas. "This will not only bring jobs to the area, it will allow Morphotek to aggressively move forward with new drug development," says Philip Sass, Morphotek's executive vice president and COO, quoted in the Times Herald. He says the new plant is forecast to be completed in 18 to 24 months and will require more infrastructure than a standard office building due to the nature of the work; he also says the company does not yet know how many jobs will be created there.
