Toyota Motor North America Expands York Township, Michigan, Operations
06/12/2023
The new plant will evaluate batteries for electric and electrified vehicles in North America and will ensure that the company's batteries meet North American customer requirements by confirming performance, quality and durability of automotive batteries made by Toyota. Operations are scheduled to begin in 2025.
“This new investment in our North American R&D operation, which has been a key pillar of the Michigan automotive industry for more than 50 years, shows Toyota’s directional shift towards electrification for all,” said Shinichi Yasui, executive vice president of Toyota Motor North America (TMNA), Research and Development. “By adding these critical evaluation capabilities around automotive batteries, our team is positioned to better serve the needs of our customers, including Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, the latter of which will soon be assembling the recently announced all-new, three-row, battery electric SUV.”
The Michigan Strategic Fund is supporting this expansion with a Michigan Business Development Program grant of $500,000 and the MEDC has approved a 12-year State Education Tax Abatement valued at $1.09 million. York Township and Ann Arbor SPARK are supportive of the project.
“We are thrilled to welcome this significant investment by Toyota as we continue to position Michigan as the undisputed leader in vehicle electrification and future mobility. The company’s new Driving Possibilities initiative supports our efforts to promote careers and recruit talent to fill jobs in Michigan’s surging electric vehicle and transportation mobility sector, and underscores our state’s talented workforce,” noted?Quentin Messer, Jr.,?CEO of the MEDC and President and Chair of the Michigan Strategic Fund. “We are grateful to Governor Whitmer, legislators from both parties, and local officials for their continued support for our programs that help make announcements like today’s possible. Today’s investment is an example of Make It In Michigan and demonstrates its focus on People, Place and Projects that are making a tangible difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors.”
The facility will be included in Toyota’s enrollment in DTE Energy’s MIGreenPower program. This voluntary renewable energy program enables all of Toyota’s Research and Development operations in Michigan to attribute 100% of its electricity use to renewable energy projects starting in 2026.
“Toyota is a leader in new technologies and finding unique pathways to connect with STEM talent. This new research & development investment is an important part of our region’s expertise in growing new mobility technologies,” added Paul Krutko, President & CEO of Ann Arbor SPARK. “Ann Arbor SPARK is pleased to partner with Toyota as they grow in York Township.”
