GE Building $600M Solar Panel Plant; Hasn't Announced Location

04/07/2011
GE will invest more than $600 million to build a U.S. factory producing thin-film, photovoltaic solar panels, making it the largest solar panel manufacturing facility in the country to date.

"Our plan to open a U.S. solar manufacturing facility further demonstrates our confidence in this technology and is just the first phase in a global, multi-gigawatt roadmap. We're not only excited by the efficiency milestone, but also by the speed at which our team was able to achieve it and the innovation runway for future improvements in this technology," said Victor Abate, vice president of GE's renewable energy business.

The 400-megawatt facility will create 400 jobs and produce enough solar panels to power 80,000 U.S. homes each year. GE has not yet announced a location for the facility, but says it will select the site soon.
