ThyssenKrup to Begin Steel Production in Mobile, Alabama in July
06/23/2010
The German steel producer will make 72-inch wide steel for the tank industry. It will be one of the only facilities in North America capable of manufacturing steel of that size. Meanwhile, its carbon steel plant will serve the automotive, construction, pipe and tube, and service center sectors.
The United States currently imports all of its 72-inch steel from Europe and China. The company will improve its supply chain with the facility.
"If you want to build a supply chain on that, you need it close by," ThyssenKrup CEO Uli Albrecht-Frueh told IndustryWeek. "You can't wait three, four weeks for a shipment."
The company expects the plant's melt shop to be in operation by 2012.
