Dell Pays Back State Incentives to North Carolina
Area Development Online News Desk (10/28/2009)
Information technology giant Dell has repaid in full more than $1.5 million in job-related incentives to the state of North Carolina, according to the Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area. The company announced earlier this month that it will close its manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem and eliminate 905 jobs. The plant will have been open for only four years at its closing date, less than the five-year minimum required of several government incentives it received, including the $1.51 million in Job Development Investment Grants awarded by the state in 2006 and 2007. The Journal reports that the mayor of Winston-Salem has received a commitment from Dell to repay $26.5 million in local incentives. Dell says it will abide by all repayment terms of its incentive contracts for the Winston-Salem facility, which total approximately $280 million.
