Chrysler Considers Four-Day Workweek

Chrysler LLC will propose to the United Auto Workers that workers at some plants shift to a four-day workweek of 10 hours per day. Multiple news sources, some citing an earlier report from Automotive News, say the company hopes to cut energy costs by shutting down parts of the plants on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, as well as give workers the opportunity to reduce the number of commuting trips to work. "I would suspect a majority of employees would probably be in favor of something like this these days," says Ed Saenz, a company spokesperson. If approved by the union, the changes would take place at four plants in Detroit, Michigan; three in Toledo, Ohio; one in Newark, Delaware; one in Trenton, Michigan; and one in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The company says that if the test goes well, it would consider other locations as well.
