South Carolina Welcomes Steel, Food Manufacturing Investment

04/24/2008
Olympic Steel, Inc. will locate a manufacturing facility in Sumter, South Carolina, at an investment of approximately $10 million. The Ohio-based company plans to create 65 new jobs at full operations. "The Sumter location was particularly attractive to us because of its excellent proximity to original equipment manufacturers and the availability of a skilled labor force," says Michael D. Siegal, chair and CEO of Olympic Steel. At the same time, FPL Food LLC will invest more than $4 million to locate a beef processing plant at an existing facility in West Columbia, South Carolina. The Georgia-based company plans to hire 100 people and transfer a portion of its Augusta, Georgia, work force to the new facility. Francois Leger, the company's president and CEO, cited the opportunity to enhance internal and external logistics as a key factor in the site selection decision.
