Factory Orders Down for September

11/04/2008
Factory orders from United States manufacturers fell by 2.5 percent in September from the previous month's figure, according to figures from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The decrease is three times larger than industry analysts' average prediction of 0.7 percent. Orders for durable goods - big-ticked items meant to last three years or more - rose 0.9 percent, but orders in non-durable goods - which include food, clothing, and petroleum products - dropped 5.5 percent. Other decreases include steel and aluminum products, computers and electronic equipment, and non-defense capital goods excluding aircraft. Orders for transportation equipment rose 6.5 percent overall, with autos and auto parts up 2.7 percent.
