EU Reaches Agreement on Climate Package

12/12/2008
Leaders of the European Union (EU) have unanimously agreed on a climate change package that will reduce greenhouse gases and increase renewable energy sources. Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports that the "20-20-20 Deal" will decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by the year 2020, create 20 percent energy savings throughout the union, and bring renewable energy sources up to 20 percent of total energy use. "No continent has given itself such binding rules that we have adopted with unanimity," says French President Nicolas Sarkozy, quoted by AFP. EU leaders reached the agreement at the end of a two-day energy summit in Belgium.
