New Balance Expands Skowhegan, Maine, Operations
12/21/2022
The investment will include capital equipment in addition to construction costs and will allow the company to double its output of athletic footwear to one million pairs of shoes a year. Construction is scheduled for Spring 2023, according to local officials.
“Expanded manufacturing would boost the local economy and attract new residents interested in working at the facility,” said John Campbell, New Balance’s vice president of corporate services. “The company would develop adjacently owned parcels to provide adequate parking, essentially creating a New Balance campus.
The town and New Balance are working on permits and tax increment financing for the project.
"If you look at the 200 jobs themselves, that's super, but the spinoff jobs from this is just as important," noted Skowhegan Economic and Community Development Director Jeff Hewett. "This is $65 million that they are talking about investing in this facility, which will be a state-of-the-art facility. That to me is the biggest thing because it stabilizes that company here."
Boston, Massachusetts-based New Balance Athletics, Inc., best known as simply New Balance, is one of the world's major sports footwear and apparel manufacturers. The Skowhegan plant is one of five manufacturing facilities the company has in New England, with the others in Norridgewock and Norway, Maine, and Lawrence and Methuen, Massachusetts.
