Some Unemployment for 26M Americans in 2009, BLS Reports

According to its annual Work Experience of the Population report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that 64 percent of Americans worked full-time, year-round in 2009, a decrease from 65.6 percent in 2008. More than 26 million people experienced some unemployment in 2009, a significant jump from 4.9 million people in 2008.

Nearly 160 million people worked or searched for jobs in 2009. Of this group, 26.1 million people were unemployed at some point during that year, an increase from 21.2 million in 2008.

Of the unemployed in 2009, the median number of weeks spent searching for a job reached 19.7 weeks, an increase from 15.2 weeks in 2008. Nearly 6 million people searched for a job but did not work, a jump from 2.7 million people in 2008.

More than 20 million people worked during 2009 and also experienced joblessness. 20.5 percent of this group had at least two instances of unemployment, a decrease from 22.1 percent in 2008.
