Obama Names Treasury Secretary Nominee, Chief Economic Advisors

11/24/2008
President-elect Barack Obama has named Timothy Geithner as his nominee for Secretary of the  Treasury. At a news conference earlier today, Obama also named Lawrence Summers as director of the National Economic Council; Christina Romer as chair of the Council of Economic Advisors; and Melody Barnes and Heather Higginbotham as director and deputy director of the Domestic Policy Council. Geithner is currently president of the New York Federal Reserve, and has held senior positions with the International Monetary Fund and the Treasury Department. Summers, a former president of Harvard University, was Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton and chief economist of the World Bank during the 1990s. Romer is a professor of economics at University of California-Berkeley and formerly taught at Princeton University. Barnes, a member of Obama's campaign advisory team, was executive vice president of the Center for American Progress and served as chief counsel to Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.). Higginbotham, also a member of Obama's campaign staff, was legislative director for Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) and executive director of the American Security Project.
