Illinois Electronics Firm Relocating HQ, Mexican Manufacturing

03/06/2008
Littelfuse, a manufacturer of electronic circuit protection products, will transfer its semiconductor assembly and testing operations from Matamoros, Mexico, to the company's existing facility in Wuxi, China, in a phased transition over the next two years. At the conclusion of the transfer, the Matamoros facility will close. The company expects to generate more than US$7 million in annual savings upon completion of the transition. "Combining assembly, testing and wafer fabrication into one facility will increase efficiency and reduce manufacturing costs," says Gordon Hunter, CEO of Littelfuse. More than 950 people are currently employed at the Mexico facility. At the same time, Littelfuse will relocate its headquarters from Des Plaines, Illinois, to an existing building in nearby Chicago, now that the manufacturing operations once housed in Des Plaines have all been shifted to locations abroad. Company officials cited access to public transportation and amenities as key to the move.
