Notebook Computer Shipments Surpass Desktops for First Time

12/23/2008
Global shipments of notebook computers have overtaken those of desktop computers for the first time ever. The Wall Street Journal reports that, according to data from market research firm iSuppli, notebook shipments rose nearly 40 percent to 38.6 million units during the third quarter of 2008, while desktop shipments fell 1.3 percent to 38.5 million units. "This marks a major event in the PC market because it marks the start of the age of the notebook," says Matthew Wilkins, iSuppli analyst, quoted in the Journal. Worldwide PC unit shipments rose 15 percent to 79 million units in spite of the global recession. The top five manufacturers for the period, according to iSuppli, were Hewlett-Packard, Dell Inc., Acer Inc., Lenovo Group, and Toshiba Corporation.
