Poll: Americans Support Auto Bailout — But No More

A majority of American are in favor of the federal government's bailout of the U.S. auto industry, but do not want any additional funds to go to the automakers, according to a CNN/Opinion Research poll. Sixty-three percent of those surveyed say they support the decision to provide bridge loans to General Motors (GM) and Chrysler; but 70 percent say that the companies should be allowed to enter bankruptcy if they require additional assistance. The survey also finds that 65 percent of the respondents would not be likely to buy a car from an auto company that has entered bankruptcy. says 1,013 adults were polled by Opinion Research Corporation from December 19 through 21; the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.
