Taiwanese Solar Company Buying GE Plant in Delaware

Taiwan-based solar cell manufacturer Motech Industries Inc. will invest US$4.54 million to purchase a factory in Newark, Delaware, from General Electric Company's energy unit. The company says in a statement that it will retain the 75 employees at the plant, which assembles crystalline silicon-based photovoltaic modules. Under the purchase agreement, Motech will have the rights to use GE Energy's module trademark for two years, and will assume the warranty services to GE's existing module clients. "We will do our best to maintain the high quality and safety standards GE has established at this factory," says Simon Tsuo, Motech's chair and CEO. Agence France-Presse reports that the plant has an annual capacity of about 30 megawatts. The deal is expected to close early next month.
