General Atomics Expands Shannon, Mississippi, Manufacturing Operations

Defense technology manufacturer General Atomics plans to expand its operations in Shannon, Mississippi. The $87 million project is expected to create 125 jobs in Lee County.

The investment will include the construction of a new 200,000-square-foot manufacturing facility that will expand production capabilities for advanced weapons systems, including Vektrex, a maneuvering 155mm precision-guided munition, and other precision-strike programs. Operations are scheduled to begin in 2028.

“A strong defense industrial base is essential to America’s security and economic strength. This investment strengthens our ability to meet evolving national security needs by expanding manufacturing capacity, creating high-quality jobs and driving innovation that supports America’s long-term defense readiness,” said General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems President Scott Forney.

To support the project, the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) is providing assistance with site preparation and construction costs, along with support through the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive (MFLEX) program. Lee County is also assisting with the project.

For years, General Atomics’ team in Shannon has developed and manufactured the advanced defense technologies that directly support our nation’s security, and Mississippi is proud to remain a major part of that work,” noted MDA Executive Director Bill Cork.

General Atomics develops and manufactures advanced technologies supporting defense, government and national security customers across operational environments ranging from undersea to space.
