HCL America Invests $3.35 Million To Build A Technology Center with Consumer’s Energy Creating Up To 500 Jobs

HCL America, a subsidiary of India-based HCL Technologies, an Internet Technology services provider, and Consumer's Energy, an electric and gas company, are collaborating on a new facility, The Michigan Technology Development Center, expected to create from 300 to 500 jobs in Jackson, Michigan.

HCL America will provide IT services to Consumers Energy. HCL will invest up to $3.35 million to establish its IT Center at downtown Jackson's Commonwealth Commerce Center, 209 East Washington Avenue.

HCL expects to hire local technology professionals and create 300 professional technology positions. The Michigan Technology Development Center will also become a training and development hub for advanced and emerging IT processes. The center will establish a learning academy to train Consumers Energy employees on advanced and emerging technologies, and will be further expanded to accommodate 500 technology professionals in the next few years.

"Our company is making this important investment to provide our employees with new IT skills to work on high value projects and technologies that will prepare our company for the future," said Mamatha Chamarthi, Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Consumers Energy. "Through this center, HCL will provide IT operations for our company, enabling our employees to move to innovative projects."

This agreement is the result of the Consumers Energy leadership's vision to embark on a game-changing plan to move its IT department from a technology support role to technology innovators, and will utilize HCL's expertise through its matured processes and highly qualified employees, she said.

"We look forward to working with Consumers Energy on these strategic initiatives within its organization and the region."

As part of an incentive package the City of Jackson provided a 12-year tax abatement. In addition the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Michigan Strategic Fund approved a $875,000 Michigan Business Development Program incentive.
