Volvo Chooses Ener1 to Manufacture Electric Car Batteries

09/17/2009
Ener1, a developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, will provide lithium-ion batteries for Volvo Car Corporation's C30 battery electric vehicle prototype through its EnerDel, Inc. subsidiary. The Indiana-headquartered EnerDel is also providing Sweden-based Volvo, a unit of Ford Motor Company, with batteries for its V70 plug-in hybrid demonstration vehicle that will be road-tested in Europe this fall. The company says the C30 has a 95-mile range and has been designed as a zero-emission city commuter car. "We are delighted to be partnering with Volvo again on this exciting development project, which aims to test the technical solutions of a full Volvo battery electric vehicle," says Ulrik Grape, Ener1 Europe's president. "We are developing a close working relationship with Volvo and are collaborating intimately on integration of the battery and safety in these advanced vehicle concepts." In August, EnerDel received $118.5 million in funds from the U.S. Department of Energy through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to expand its lithium-ion battery production.
