The Science of Business, the Business of Science
As the nation produces more electricity with nuclear power, the question of what to do with the residue becomes increasingly critical. The answer may come from Mo-Sci Corporation, creator of a specialty glass capable of safely encapsulating nuclear waste. Mo-Sci also makes bioactive glass that delivers radiation to cancerous tumors or turns into bone to heal fractures.
Mo-Sci is just one of many technical companies spawned out of the two major economic engines driving this three-county region. One is the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, a top technological institution. The other is Fort Leonard Wood, a 63,000-acre Army base that gives the region its name. A new tech park on the fort promises to marry the technical expertise of the base with the research capabilities of the university.

This combination of brain power and affordable lifestyle is a recipe for innovation and growth. Brewer Science in Rolla is a sterling example. Because of specialized silicon coatings developed there, we can now fit greater computing capacity in our shirt pockets than used to fill up a room.
Lebanon, a favorite stop for travelers on historic Route 66, sports a diverse industrial base with aluminum boat manufacturers and a white oak barrel producer for the spirits industry. Emerson Electric is the community’s largest employer, producing scroll compressors for the residential and commercial air conditioning markets. The area’s business-friendly, “clear-the-decks” attitude brought Emerson to the region in 1990. Today they employ 1,130.
