National, Provincial Governments Partner on Alberta Carbon Capture Project

Location Canada 2009
The governments of Canada and the province of Alberta will combine funding of CAN$778.8 million for a project to capture carbon emissions at the TransAlta Keephills 3 power plant near Edmonton, Alberta, according to the Canadian Press (CP). The project, which is partially funded from Canada's economic stimulus package, is expected to eventually redirect 1 million tons of greenhouse gasses into underground pipelines and then back into saline aquifers or porous rocks. CP reports that carbon capture and storage are largely untried at scales large enough to make a difference to climate change, but that the technology has been used successfully at smaller facilities. TransAlta says the company will make a final decision on the project's feasibility in about a year; if it is approved, carbon capture should be taking place by 2015.
