High-Tech Continues to Grow

The nation's largest high-tech trade association - AeA - released its 11th annual Cyberstates report at the beginning of April, providing information on national and state trends in high-tech employment, wages, and other economic factors. Cyberstates 2008: A Complete State-by-State Overview of the High-Technology Industry indicates that, in 2007, the high-tech industry added 91,400 net jobs for a total of 5.9 million nationwide.

The sectors showing the most growth included software services (+82,600 jobs) and engineering and tech services (+45,800). High-tech manufacturing actually lost 29,800 jobs. On a state-by-state basis, the leaders were California (+21,400 net high-tech jobs), Texas (+13,700), Virginia (+9,800), New Jersey (+8,500), and New Mexico (+6,700).
