Solar Energy Manufacturer Expanding in Ohio

08/19/2008
First Solar, Inc., a manufacturer of photovoltaic power systems used for solar energy production, will expand its manufacturing operations and development facility in Perrysburg, Ohio. The company plans to add approximately 500,000 square feet of manufacturing, research and development, and office space to its existing facility, and add at least 134 new jobs. At full capacity, expected in the second quarter of 2010, company officials say the plant will be able to generate 192 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 48,000 homes at once if operating in direct sunlight. "Scaling our manufacturing capacity while taking advantage of existing infrastructure will incrementally lower the manufacturing cost per watt at a rate comparable to our lowest cost facility in Malaysia," says Bruce Sohn, First Solar's president. The project is contingent on approval of a comprehensive state and local incentive package, details of which have not been announced. First Solar is headquartered in Arizona.
