BMW and Toyota Agree to Work Together on "Green" Car Battery
12/01/2011
"We are now joining forces to further develop environmentally friendly technologies and to expand our innovation leadership in each of our segments," said BMW Chairman Norbert Reithofer. The European car company said it is going forward with this collaboration due to the Japanese automaker's expertise with hybrids. To date, Toyota has sold over 3.4 million hybrids around the globe.
Toyota Executive VP Takeshi Uchiyamada noted that the research partnership will "allow for the development of the next-generation battery faster and at a higher level."
The terms of the "milestone" agreement require BMW to supply 2.0 liter and 1.6 liter fuel-efficient diesel engines for Toyota. The automakers also have been discussing plans to work together on other technology-focused projects; but as of now they are mum on the details.
