BWXT Plans Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Manufacturing Operations

04/20/2025
BWXT Enrichment Operations, a subsidiary of BWX Technologies, Inc., plans to establish operations in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The at least $45 million project is expected to create approximately 60 jobs.

The new facility, located on 96.53 acres, will manufacture centrifuge assemblies and support fuel production for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s defense program mission.

“The Oak Ridge community is a hub of innovation and nuclear expertise ready to support the NNSA’s national security mission. The deployment of the domestically manufactured DUECE centrifuge resets our nation on the path to energy independence,” Kevin McCoy, president of government operations, BWXT said.

The project is being supported by the Nuclear Energy Fund which assists nuclear power-related businesses choosing to relocate or grow in Tennessee and supports the state’s educational and research institutions in further developing their nuclear education programs.

“With Oak Ridge’s integral role in WWII with the Manhattan Project and forward-thinking leadership from Gov. Lee and our General Assembly members in creating the Nuclear Energy Fund, Tennessee is primed to become an epicenter for the nuclear industry. We’re grateful to partner with the Y-12 National Security Complex, ORNL and our other educational institutions across the state in providing the resources to enhance science, technology and training to support companies like BWXT. Congratulations to our partners and BWXT in bringing this project to fruition,” noted TNECD Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter.

BWXT Enrichment Operations is focused on supporting domestic uranium enrichment to meet national security needs.

“Creating job opportunities and bringing investment to the region is fundamental to TVA’s mission of service. We are proud to partner with the City of Oak Ridge Electric Department, Oak Ridge Industrial Development Board, Oak Ridge Corridor Development Agency, City of Oak Ridge, Roane County, Anderson County, East Tennessee Development Agency and the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development to further that mission and welcome BWXT to the region. We wish them success and look forward to working together to serve the Tennessee Valley,” added Don Moul, president and chief executive officer.
