Prysmian Expands Catawba County, North Carolina, Production Operations

Cable and fiber manufacturer Prysmian plans to expand its operations in Claremont, North Carolina. The more than $1 billion project is expected to create 385 jobs in Catawba County.

The investment at the company’s existing site will include the vertical integration of a new glass production facility and upgrades to existing buildings that will double fiber optic manufacturing capacity.

“This investment demonstrates our commitment to supporting the growth of the U.S. demand for advanced digital solutions,” said Andrea Pirondini, Prysmian North America CEO. “We are one of just three U.S. manufacturers of fiber and optical cables, and now we are committing more than a billion dollars to new innovative solutions and transformational capacity growth.”

To support the project a performance-based grant of $1 million from the One North Carolina Fund will be awarded to Prysmian Cables and Systems USA, LLC. The OneNC Fund provides financial assistance to local governments to help attract economic investment and create jobs. Companies receive no money upfront and must meet job creation and capital investment targets to qualify for payment. Prysmian must invest $665 million to receive One NC grant payments. All OneNC grants require matching participation from local governments, and any award is contingent upon that condition being met.

In addition to the North Carolina Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC), project partners include the North Carolina General Assembly, Commerce’s Division of Workforce Solutions, the North Carolina Community College System, Catawba Valley Community College, Duke Energy, Piedmont Natural Gas, Catawba County, the City of Claremont and the Catawba County Economic Development Corporation.

“This announcement is further confirmation Catawba County is the preeminent location in the United States for communications technology manufacturing,” added Jeff Cline, Chair of the Catawba County EDC Board of Directors. “Prysmian joins Corning Optical Communications, CommScope and others in a remarkable concentration of companies producing the fiber, cable, and connectors that connect our nation. This cluster is second to none, and projects like this one ensure it will continue to lead for generations to come.”

Prysmian is a manufacturer of cable systems and connectivity solutions for the energy, telecommunications, and digital infrastructure markets. The company specializes in the development and manufacturing of power transmission and distribution cables, fiber-optic and telecommunications cables, submarine cable systems, and related connectivity technologies.
