Dow Chemical, K2 Investing $100 Million for California Bleach, Chemical Factories

01/07/2009
Dow Chemical and K2 Pure Solutions, a manufacturer of bleach products, will jointly invest $100 million to open a bleach factory at Dow's facility in Pittsburg, California. According to joint company statements, the new plant will serve municipal water treatment markets in northern California and will provide 200 construction jobs and 40 permanent positions at the plant when complete. At the same time, the two companies will operate a separate facility that will produce materials for crop protection products. "K2 will utilize Inherently Safe salt-to-bleach technology, an emerging, sustainable process that utilizes salt, water, and electricity as the principle raw materials necessary to produce bleach and chlor-alkali products," says David Cynamon, K2's co-founder. The two projects will create an annual capacity of 460 million pounds of chlor-alkali products, with initial bleach production expected during the fourth quarter of 2010.
