Report: Spain Needs Skilled Immigrants to Fill Professional Shortfall

10/28/2008
Even with its economy slowing, Spain needs more than 100,000 qualified foreign workers per year over the next four years to fill open positions. Agence France-Presse cites a report from Spain-based Etnia Comunicacion that says the country particularly needs qualified workers in information technology, healthcare, and engineering - industry groups report a shortage of 25,000 engineers alone, mostly in the telecommunications sector. The report says Spain's low birth rate and aging population are to blame for the gap. Last year, Spain recruited 200,000 immigrants from foreign countries, and hired 88,180 workers abroad between January and June of this year. The country has been in a severe economic downturn since the collapse of its property sector last year.
